Campus Overview

University of New Hampshire (UNH) is a mid-sized public research university located in Durham, offering a comprehensive academic experience with a strong emphasis on community and engagement. With approximately 12,000-13,000 undergraduate students, UNH provides a balanced environment between intimate learning and robust university resources.

Location & Setting Situated in a suburban/rural setting in southeastern New Hampshire, the UNH campus is nestled in the small college town of Durham, approximately 10 miles from the seacoast and 60 miles north of Boston. The surrounding area offers a quintessential New England college town atmosphere with easy access to both natural landscapes and urban amenities.

Campus Life Campus life is active and collaborative, with a mix of traditional residence halls, apartment-style housing, and themed living communities. While not heavily Greek-life oriented, UNH offers numerous clubs, intramural sports, and campus events that create a tight-knit social environment. Weekend activities often include outdoor recreation, campus events, and trips to nearby Portsmouth or Boston.

Student Body The student population is predominantly from New England, with a growing number of out-of-state and international students. Students tend to be academically motivated, outdoors-oriented, and community-minded, with strong interests in environmental sciences, engineering, and marine studies. The campus culture values sustainability and hands-on learning.

Academics UNH is recognized for strong programs in marine sciences, environmental studies, engineering, and agriculture. The university emphasizes research opportunities for undergraduates and maintains a moderate academic rigor. Small class sizes and accessible faculty characterize the academic experience, with a focus on applied learning and practical research.

Athletics & Sports Competing in NCAA Division I (Hockey East, America East conferences), UNH has particular strength in ice hockey with a passionate fan base. The Wildcats have competitive teams across various sports, and campus athletic spirit is notable, especially during hockey and football seasons. Athletic facilities are modern and well-maintained.

Lifestyle & Weather New Hampshire experiences four distinct seasons, with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The campus is somewhat walkable, but a car can be helpful for off-campus activities. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy proximity to mountains, beaches, and hiking trails. Students engage in skiing, hiking, coastal activities, and exploring the surrounding New England landscape.
