Campus Overview

Washington and Lee University is a prestigious, highly selective small liberal arts college located in the historic town of Lexington, Virginia. With approximately 1,800 undergraduate students, W&L offers an intimate and intellectually rigorous academic environment that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction and personalized learning.


Location & Setting Rural small-town setting in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley. Lexington is a charming, historic town with a population of around 7,500, offering a quiet, close-knit community atmosphere surrounded by scenic mountain landscapes.

Campus Life Small campus with a strong Greek life presence, where approximately 75% of students participate in fraternities and sororities. Social scene is tight-knit and collaborative, with numerous traditions and a close student community. On-campus housing is prevalent, and weekend activities tend to center around campus and local community events.

Student Body Predominantly national student population, drawing students from across the United States with moderate geographic diversity. Typically upper-middle-class background, academically motivated students who value intellectual engagement and traditional academic excellence. Students are often characterized as collaborative, driven, and interested in leadership opportunities.

Academics Renowned for exceptional undergraduate education with a strong emphasis on liberal arts and pre-professional programs. Particularly strong in law, business, journalism, and humanities. Offers unique honors programs and independent study opportunities. Academic culture is challenging but supportive, with very low student-to-faculty ratios.

Athletics & Sports NCAA Division III athletics with a competitive but not high-pressure sports culture. Strong athletic participation through varsity, club, and intramural sports. Strongest traditional programs include soccer, swimming, and tennis. Campus athletic spirit is present but not dominant compared to larger state universities.

Lifestyle & Weather Four distinct seasons with mild winters and warm summers. Located in a beautiful mountain region with excellent outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, and skiing nearby. A car is helpful but not absolutely necessary due to the compact campus and small-town setting. Outdoor and recreational activities are a significant part of student life.
